Basic Facts
Very much like
hamsters, gerbils are also a very popular pet. Inexpensive
and entertaining, gerbils offer a viable substitute to the
hamster. They too are nocturnal and have a life span of two
to three years.
Recommended Habitat
Gerbils love to burrow and
create tunnels, and so a thick layer of bedding should be
provided in their habitat. An aquarium will allow you to give
your pet a thicker layer, while keeping the gerbil from kicking
the bedding out of its home. There are several different types
of bedding that you can use; aspen is the best for burrowing.
The bedding must be changed once a week, while spot removal
will ensure that the smell stays down.
Wooden homes, plastic homes,
and any tubes (cardboard or plastic) will provide a good play
area for your gerbil. They will also appreciate a well or
hamster ball for exercise. Always remember to ensure that
your pet’s cage is safe and secure.
Care and Diet
Like hamsters, gerbils should
be fed a combination of NutriBlocks and seed mix. You can
give them a moderate amount of chopped kale, spinach, apple,
broccoli or carrots, which also provide a good source of fiber.
Gerbils need a mineral stone and wood chews to keep their
ever-growing teeth ground down. Fresh water must be provided
daily, and the use of a water bottle will aid in keeping the
water clean (as opposed to a water dish). Gerbils are desert
animals, and do not drink a lot of water, so do not be alarmed
if your pet doesn’t seem to be drinking much. Still, you will
need to replace the water everyday.
After giving your gerbil
twenty-four full hours to adjust to his new home, when you
do start to handle him, pick him up carefully, always remembering
not to pick him up by the tail.
Gerbils are community animals,
and there is usually no problem in keeping more than one if
you provide a large enough space. They usually mate for life,
and litters can range anywhere from one to twelve offspring.
The gestation period is twenty-four days.
